Gaza Under fire ( Palestine )

Hamas and Israel have agreed to an Egyptian-brokered ceasefire to bring to an end some of the worst violence to hit the Gaza strip in two years.

Yet not everyone is happy. Palestinians on the ground remain sceptical of the Jewish state’s commitment to a fragile peace – especially as a fisherman was shot dead just hours after the truce came into force. And then there is the question of the Israeli Defence’s minister surprise resignation. Avigdor Lieberman was reportedly irked at not being allowed to up assaults on a people who been living under a blockade imposed by his country more than a decade ago; as a calculated means of controlling the local economy as well as airspace, territorial waters and land borders. There is now talk inside Tel Aviv of a snap election. All of which could spell more unrest for the Palestinians.

That being said, palace intrigues will be of little interest to the people of Gaza. Rather, their concern is that the clandestine Israeli cross-border raid into their territory at the beginning of the week – that sparked the bloodshed by killing a senior Hamas commander and six others – was nothing short of extra-judicial killing. And that more such assassinations might be in the offing; thereby prolonging the cycle of violence. After all, Hamas responded by firing rockets into Israel. Forty-eight hours later: 15 Palestinians and two Israelis were dead.

For many Palestinians, the incursion represents a strong message to abandon their weekly protests that have been taking place along the fence with the Jewish state since the end of March; demanding the right of return. The intervening period has seen more than 200 Palestinians killed and thousands injured. And still the world remains largely silent. Never mind that social media has helped images of Israeli state brutality reach global audiences. In fact, right-wing Jewish lobbies in the US have expertly harnessed the power and outreach of micro-blogging sites like Twitter to ensure their narrative prevails. Such as when it comes to documenting instances of anti-Semitic attacks in the West. Yet the endgame here is not to highlight condemnable assaults but to ridicule Palestinian responses that seek to highlight almost daily Israeli aggression. This leads to charges of “whataboutery”. As if the Palestinian voice is not a legitimate one. The point is that one can condemn anti-Semitism while spotlighting the systematic suffering of another people that is largely dismissed by western mainstream media that casts them purely in terms of a security threat to others; ith the Palestinians being burned the most.
SP Tahir Khan dawar (Martyr)

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government and police have confirmed the murder of Superintendent Police (SP), Rural Peshawar, Tahir Dawar, across the Afghan border. And while the family readies to receive the body, which reportedly shows signs of torture, both the federal set-up and the security apparatus must prepare to answer some tough questions.

That a serving senior police officer vanished from the federal capital without a trace at the end of last month is unfathomable. That he was somehow ‘trafficked’ across the Durand Line with seemingly the greatest of ease simply beggar’s belief. Not least because the alarm was raised the day following his disappearance; with the KP and Islamabad police both alerted and a First Information Report (FIR) lodged. At best, this signals a mammoth intelligence failure across the board. Starting here in Pakistan. To the efficacy of existing Af-Pak intelligence sharing mechanisms. To the US drones that continue to operate in this country with their satellite precision tracking systems. To the presence of NATO troops across the western front.

Admittedly, one or all of the above resources may have been tapped into to uncover Dawar’s body. Yet this still fails to explain how the SP ended up in Afghanistan’s Nangarhar province. The Centre, for its part, is refusing to comment until the coffin reaches this side of the border; on national security grounds. Indeed, Minister of State for Interior Shehryar Afridi preferred to talk of a cyber war being fought against the state. The ammunition being fake images with social media as the trigger. Except that the KP government has confirmed that these pictures are, in fact, of Dawar. And while it is understandable that moves are made to keep an abduction of this kind under wraps as all efforts are directed towards safe return – now that the news of kidnapping has turned to murder, the federal set-up cannot afford to sidestep the issue.

It has been widely reported that unidentified militants pinned a note to the dead body; warning that the killing was payback for Dawar’s involvement in operations against certain non-state actors. News coming out of Afghanistan has pointed the finger at ISIS. But the reality is that a whole cast militant groups could be involved; Pakistani and foreign. Indeed, the SP, originally from Waziristan, had survived previous assassination attempts and had been transferred to Peshawar after receiving death threats from particular groups. The possibility remains that ISIS worked in collaboration with a local sectarian outfit as has happened in the past when attacking law enforcement agents. Though this is mere speculation at this point. That being said, the fact remains that when any terror outfit commits such an audacious act they tend to waste no time in claiming responsibility.

Thus in this case, those behind the abduction and murder of Taha Dawar wish to send a message of a different kind. And it is one that says no one is safe.

ANP expels Afrasiab Khattak, Bushra Gohar

PESHAWAR:

PESHAWAR: The Awami National Party (ANP) on Monday suspended the basic membership of two senior party leaders for ‘violating the party discipline and damaging its interests’.

According to a statement issued by the party, the ANP leadership issued show-cause notices to Senior Vice-President Bushra Gohar and former senator Afrasiab Khattak last week, and suspended their memberships after both failed to submit a satisfactory response.

The show-cause notice was issued by ANP Central General Secretary Mian Iftikhar Hussain on the directives of President Asfandyar Wali Khan. “Your activities are against the party’s interests, its constitution and discipline that have resulted in huge loss to the party,” the show-cause notice read. “Your activities had a negative effect on the workers and created confusion and led to misunderstandings that damaged the party’s
interests,” it added.

The party had asked the two leaders to submit their response within seven days or face disciplinary action.

“Their responses are not satisfactory at all, therefore the party president has suspended their basic membership according to the party constitution,” the notification read. However, the notification did not state the exact charges or details of the activities the two leaders had been suspended for.

“Political workers can be unfairly expelled from pol party but they can’t be expelled from politics. We shall steadfastly continue struggle against all forms of oppression, suppression & exploitation. My heartfelt thanks to all dear friends for solidarity,” Khattak said in a tweet following his suspension.
